Something to Hide
by Sheniqua Waters
Syrus stood up and walked to a nearby table that held a flagon and a small glass. He picked up the flagon and poured liquid from flagon into the glass.
"The Klan. Now that’s serious stuff,” he said after he took a sip. “You must be terrified knowing that Brock is in the same predicament as his father and his father was killed by The Klan.”
A sob caught in Lily’s throat.
“You were separated from Brock for three years. It would be very sad if Brock were hung. Then, you’d be separated from him for a whole lot longer.”
Lily rose to her feet. “Syrus, you’re my only hope. You’ve got to get the money.”
Syrus gulped from his glass then remarked, “Honestly Lily, I don’t know if I can do that.”
Lily walked to where he stood. “You can get the money, can’t you?” she questioned.
“Of course I can get the money, Lily. But, what I want to know is, can I get you?”
Lily took a step back. “What are you saying?”
“I’m saying you don’t have the money to save Brock and you can’t go to anyone else to get it or Brock will be harmed. You want thousands of dollars and you want it from me. Well, my dear, I want you.” Syrus sat on the edge of the table. “I’ve gone a long time without getting what I want. I think it’s time that changes.”
Lily stared at him in determined disbelief.
Syrus shrugged his shoulders in response to her expression.
“You can’t be serious!” Lily stated.
Syrus took another gulp from his glass then he locked his gray eyes with her amber ones. “You tell Father or Marla what takes place in this room tonight and I will be the first to sing the secret of your birth from the mountain tops.”
“How dare you threaten me with my birth!”
“I am well aware of how important it is to you and your mother to hide your secret. It’s important to Brock too. That’s why he made Sylvia keep her mouth shut. If you tell Father or Marla and they confront me about this, your sweet reunion with your precious Brock will be over because I will tell every thing. And, once I do, Brock will be shunned for being with you.”
Lily shook her head. “Syrus, I don’t understand why you are talking this way.”
“Oh yes you do, my pretty.” He let his eyes roam over her body. “You knew this day would come. I told you there would be a reckoning if you spurned me.”
“Syrus! No!” Lily backed away from him.
“From the day I spied you in your room and realized you were no longer a scrawny girl I’ve wanted to possess you. It’s kept me awake at night. It’s been true torture. Thinking about you with Brock…his hands on you…touching you…”
Suddenly, the glass in Syrus’ hand crushed under the pressure of his fist. Its delicate pieces shattered and clanked onto the floor.
“Syrus!” Lily gasped. “My god! What’s come over you?”
“Lust my dear. Indescribable, undeniable lust.”
“Don’t talk like that! I owe it to --!”
“Damn it woman! You owe Brock nothing!” Syrus slammed his hand on the top of the table. When he lifted it, red droplets of blood began to appear on his palm.
Lily screamed.
“You can scream all you want. After I sent you up here, I sent the servants away. They won’t be returning to the house tonight.”
Lily tried to walk past Syrus.
He seized her arm. “What is so good about Brock? Do you think he’s better than me because I’m adopted?”
Lily pulled against Syrus’ grip.
He drew her against his chest. “You should be grateful I still want you. Besides, I have all the money you need. I will give it to you if you give me what I want.”
“Syrus No!”
He leaned down and catching her off guard pressed his cold wet lips on her mouth.
Lily struggled to pull away from him. “Brock was right about you! He told me you couldn’t be trusted!” she screeched and rushed toward the door.
As her hand touched the door, Syrus called out, “You leave this room and Brock dies!”
Lily came to a screeching halt.
“You can’t get the money anywhere else. There’s no time. So, I’m going to tell you what you are going to do and you’re going to do it,” Syrus’ tone was low.
Lily remained still.
“You’re going to turn around and walk back to me. Then, you’re going to persuade me to give you the money. If you don’t, Brock will pay for your refusal with his life!”
Lily remained motionless for many moments as she contemplated her fate. With her back toward Syrus, she thought of Brock and her heart ached. She knew he would not want her to consider for one second Syrus’ offer. However, she knew she would not see her husband dead. She loved him more than her own life and knew she must do what she could to save him.
Squaring her shoulders, Lily whispered a prayer for strength then turned to face her foe.
